1. You must dissect and know the roots of your failures and falling down. You should be cognizant of the law that those who possess an arrogant nature will inevitably fall down and fail;

2. You must recognize that this is God’s salvation. Without failure and falling down, you would never be able to examine yourself or know yourself—failures and falling down are opportunities for positive change;

3. You must have the resolution to pursue the truth—failure and falling down are not to be feared. Only if someone absolutely refuses to accept the truth, then they truly are beyond saving;

4. You must summarize the experiences and lessons gained from failure. Without the truth, you will be unable to stand firm and, if you transgress, then so long as you truly repent, you can still be saved.

The Principles of How to Approach Transgressions

1. When you transgress, do not give in to despair. Understand that God’s will is the utmost salvation, and that true repentance is critical;

2. When you discover a transgression, you must examine yourself, seek the truth and understand the essence and root of the transgression. Only by effecting true repentance can you be saved;

3. Take hold of the essence and the root of transgressions, use the truth to resolve the problem, and allow your practice of the truth to take the place of the transgression. Avoid repeating past transgressions that offend God’s disposition;

4. Do not be restrained by past transgressions. As long as you pursue the truth and truly repent, then you can be saved and blessed by God.

The Principles of Resolving Arrogance and Self-importance

1. You must accept the judgment and chastisement of God’s words. When you truly know the essence of your own satanic nature and the truth of your corruption, you then gain reason;

2. You must accept being pruned and dealt with, and disciplined and exposed by God. Once you have experienced failures and setbacks, trials and refinement, you then know yourself inside and out;

3. You must recognize that God is supreme and that God incarnate is humble and hidden, and you must see clearly that arrogance and self-importance are indeed the essence of a satanic nature;

4. You must pursue to know God’s righteous disposition, and when reverence and fear of God arise in you, you are then able to keep a low profile and not defy or betray God.

There was no mother and no father around when Zixuan was growing up; she didn’t know what the cakes the children from the city talked about tasted like, and she’d never seen a goldfish blow bubbles in a fish tank. On no evening did she ever hear the stories of Grimm’s fairytales, but instead she listened to her grandpa tell her the story of The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants. Her real father leaving and her mother remarrying had brought about feelings of inferiority when she was little, and even more so had become a shadow in the depth of her heart that she could not drive away. Especially when she saw the other children with their parents, caring for them and being with them, Zixuan’s heart would ache with pain.

In 2007 I suddenly fell ill with chronic renal failure. On being told the news, my Christian mother and sister-in-law, and some Catholic friends all came to visit me to preach the gospelto me. They all told me that I only had to go to God and my illness would be cured. But I didn’t believe in God at all. I thought that illness could only be cured through scientific medical treatment, and that any disease that couldn’t be cured by science was incurable. After all, was there any power on earth greater than the power of science? Faith in God was just a form of psychological crutch, and I was an upstanding state school teacher, a person who was educated and cultured, so there was no way I’d start believing in God. So I turned them down and started looking around for medical treatment. Within a few years I’d been to virtually every large hospital in my home county and throughout the province, but my condition didn’t improve. In fact, it was getting worse, but I stubbornly clung to my own way of looking at the situation and insisted that science could change anything and that curing illness was just a question of finding the right process.
